KERIKERI Area… things to see & do.

Things to see and do in this area.

Kerikeri Village.
A quaint, yet surprisingly busy hub, to this very progressive area. Shopping is good, and caters for most needs.
There are wonderful restaurants and cafes offering a good variety of foods.
Two Supermarkets, New World and Price chopper.
Kerikeri was one of the earliest places settled in New Zealand, and the oldest trading store, The Stone Store, is still trading today, in the Kerikeri basin.
Next door to the Store, is Kemp House, a fine example of how the early settlers lived, and open to the public. Across the road is a lovely restraunt The Pear Tree. Good food, and lovely views over the river basin.

Farmers Market is something to attend on a Sunday Morning. There is a huge range of local produce and an arts market as well. Open 8.30 am to Midday every Sunday.

Cathay Theatre, in Cobham Rd has just been totally updated, and now has three delightful, small, and very comfortable, theatres, and shows the latest movies at good seat charges.

The Chocolate Factory is worth a visit, and you can have a free taste of the delicious chocolates, and see them being made.

Rainbow Falls is well worth a visit and spectacular after rain. There is a nice 30 minute walk from the falls to the Stone Store basin, following the river. (Have a coffee or lunch at the Pear Tree restaurant, and then walk back up the river.)

Doves Bay Marina is only 15 minutes east of Kerikeri, and is a boaties haven. The views are great on the very pretty drive out, and so is Opito Bay, at the end of the road. It has a gravel beach, but clean water, and safe to swim at.( no waves)

Surf beaches are north of Kerikeri.( 25 to 40 minutes from here)
Take the Matauri Bay loop Rd, and explore the great sandy beaches of Matauri Bay, Te Ngaeri, and Tauranga Bay. Good surfing and fishing as well.
Venture further north, and visit The Whangaroa Harbour, Coopers Beach, Cable Bay, or the Whatuwhiwhi Peninsular.
See the fantastic World class Karikari Golf Course, and enjoy an unforgettable meal in their restaurant.
My choice of beach is right at the end of this peninsular. Tiny, but very beautiful, Matai Bay.

Go further, and see 90 mile beach, where the beach is a highway, and then on to the very top of New Zealand, and visit Cape Reinga.
Where the spirits of the dead are said, (by the Maori people,) to depart this land.

Closer to home, a visit up to Puketi kauri forest is a good half day trip, and an easy board walk in, to see the huge trees.

Children love the Parrot Place on Landing Rd, and they can get up close with many of the very tame birds.

There are many walkways that cater for all fitness levels.

Marty’s Golf Driving Range, 4 minutes north of here, is a great place for golf addicts, and the family. Great food in the café, and a safe children’s play area. A very relaxing place for lunch.

Fishing is good, from boats, land, and off wharves, And trout fishing at Sandy’s Rd lake.
Fishing trips can be arranged, or night diving for crayfish!

Paihia and Russell are just 25 minutes drive, and well worth a visit.
The Waitangi Treaty grounds and light show are good, if you wish to learn the local history, and Maori folk law.
